AI Beyond Automation
Where artificial intelligence can create measurable enterprise value beyond basic process automation.
Most enterprise AI programmes are justified as automation: the same process, cheaper. That framing understates both the opportunity and the risk. Automation gains are real but bounded, they asymptote at the cost of the process being replaced. The larger value sits in decision quality: pricing, allocation, risk selection and timing, where small improvements compound across the whole enterprise.
The organisations capturing this share three traits. They instrument decisions, not just workflows, they can state what a good decision looks like and measure variance from it. They treat models as infrastructure with owners and maintenance budgets, not as projects with launch dates. And they keep accountability human: a named executive remains answerable for every material decision, however it is informed.
The question is not which processes to automate, but which decisions would change the value of the enterprise if improved by ten percent.
For boards, the implication is that AI belongs in the strategy discussion, not the IT budget. The question is not which processes to automate but which decisions, improved by ten percent, would change the value of the enterprise, and who is accountable for getting them there.
